Nürburgring report - Monday 17th July 2006


A Radical SR9 led the P2 class at the beginning of the race and in the middle of the race, but not when it counted – at the end!

Following a 20 lap shake down at Pembrey, the last lap of which was spent in the barrier, the Bruichladdich Radical Team went to “the ‘Ring” with no testing under its belt.  Early boost pipe problems curtailed pre-race testing at the Nürburgring, nonetheless Stuart Moseley put the car 11th on the grid, a fraction behind the Rollcentres SR9 in 10th.  Unfortunately for Martin Shorts team, a ‘cock-up’ with the air restrictor meant that they started at the back of the grid.

Come the race, Stuart put in a storming start and was soon leading the P2 class just behind a clutch of P1 cars headed by the Pescarolo L60 Judd.  But while overtaking a back marker Stuart spun onto the grass and then came back into the pits to have the car checked out.  It was OK but the SR9 was back down the order.

From the back of the grid, meanwhile, Joao Barbosa was scything through the the field and by the time he handed the car over to Martin he was up to 1st in class and third overall ……..amazing!

And that’s where the Rollcentre Radical stayed for most of the race.  But during the last driver change from Martin to Joao the ASM Racing for Portugal Lola nipped into the lead.  No problem.  Joao hunted him down, the class win was Rollcentre’s, and then “s**t” happened (as Martin explained later), the two cars hit and Joao was in the gravel.  After being towed out and driving back to the pits, the car was back in the race.  Despite this frustration, the Rollcentre team achieved 3rd spot – disappointing but still pretty damned good.  The SR9’s first ‘pot’!

While this drama unfolded, back in the Bruichladdich Radical camp, Tim Greaves and Stuart Moseley were putting in quick lap times and were back in contention, only for the boost pipe (other end) to start playing up again.  A ten minute fix and the factory SR9 had it all to do again.  15th overall and 5th in class was their reward.  Pretty good for a test session. 

And what about that colour scheme?  Best looking car and best paint job?  I’m biased of course, but … yes. 

Well done to both teams.  You did the SR9 proud.  Donington should be interesting!
