Rollcentre’s Radical SR9 Starts Le Mans on 7th Row
- 15th June

Joao Barbosa grabs third in classAll in all a very good baptism for the Rollcentre Radical, qualifying 3rd in class and 14th overall on the second day of qualifying at Le Mans.

The Wednesday qualifying session started damp and then went from wet to very wet. The Pierre Bruneau Pilbeam lept to the top of the P2 time sheet on its second lap before the weather closed in. The Rollcentre team, wisely concentrated on getting all three drivers qualified (each must do a minimum of three laps in the dark).

In P1 the Pescarolo car topped the time sheets with Audi close behind.

Pit stop practice Thursday was bright and dry making the Wednesday times irrelevant. Early on the Radical was hit by an ECU problem which took over half an hour to solve. Martin Short drove first and the times started to tumble. When Joao Barbosa took over he soon put in a 3:44.30, just half a second behind the Intersport Lola and just under 2 seconds off the RML Lola. The Chamberlain Synergy Lola trailed the Radical by 1½ seconds with the Courages of Barazi Epsilon, Paul Belmondo Racing and Miracle Motorsport trailing by 3 secs, 4½ secs and 6½ secs respectively.

Remarkably the top eight P2 cars qualified line astern from 12th to 18th position overall. All bar the Radical are powered by AER Turbo engine which are reputed to be more powerful than the Judd, but Martin Short has put his trust in Judd with a view to 24 hour reliability. The Radical SR9 of Radical Owner Tim Greaves which is due for delivery in the next few weeks will be powered by AER. The only other P2 car powered by the 3.4ltr Judd is the Pilbeam which qualified 9th in class, some 9 seconds behind the Radical.

Stuart Moseley in the SR9 Radical Enduro Champion, Stuart Moseley, drove the car last. Stuart got up to speed in the dark but was unable to improve on Joao’s time.

In the last session Audi’s turned the tables on the Pescarolo cars and qualified 1st and 2nd, 2 seconds ahead of the Pescarolo Judd’s. The P2 pole was 3:42.50, 11 seconds behind the leading Audi.

Today the Rollcentre team will be installing the race engine in the SR9 ready for Saturday’s race which does not start until 5pm so as not to clash with the football!

Good Luck Rollcentre. May the force (reliability) be with you!
