Competition Car Insurance Radical UK Cup: Castle Combe, Race 2

19th July 2010

Castle Combe hosted another electrifying race this morning, with current Competition Car Insurance Radical UK Cup leaders Terrence Woodward and Ross Kaiser taking the second of the weekend’s UK Cup victories. On a challenging track dampened by persistent drizzle, the 360 Racing pair took victory by less than nine seconds after 40 minutes of racing.

Terrence was first into Avon Rise on the first lap, chased by teammate Derek Johnston, and Sollatek’s Manhal Allos. Quickest of the Supersport runners was Radical veteran Ian Flux, hot on the heels of Allos and using the SR3 RS’ superb wet-weather balance to good effect.

Johnston continued to pursue Woodward, and even by Lap 8 was only 1.4 seconds adrift. Allos was dropping back into the clutches of Flux, whilst further down, Radical Works Team driver David Thorburn was pushing through the field, overtaking fellow Supersport Class contender Ross Allen on the drive towards Quarry on Lap 9.

By the time the pits opened on Lap 14, Flux had closed to within 0.3 seconds of Allos, with Roger Bromiley and Sami Suominem rounding out the top six. With SR3s and SR8s stopping for different pit durations, the order was shook up a little, and Johnston initially emerged ahead of Ross Kaiser, replacing Woodward in the driving seat.

Rob Wheldon was another beneficiary of a slick stop. Up to sixth overall, he was closing fast on Craig Currie and passed him on the 25th lap to lead the Supersports Class. Kaiser also repassed Johnston, with the order Kaiser, Johnston and Shaun Balfe maintained to the chequered flag, also the top three Masters Class finishers.

David Thorburn’s incredible drive through the field, coupled with Rob Wheldon’s wet pace, awarded them both the Supersport Class honours, and the Sunoco Driver of the Day award. Second in class was the 360 Racing partnership of Mark Smithson and Stuart Moseley, with Currie and Flux third.

The next round of the Competition Car Insurance Radical UK Cup takes place at Brands Hatch, Kent.
