Radical @ Castle Combe: Qualifying
16th July 2010
Qualifying for the Competition Car Insurance Radical UK Cup and Quaife Radical Clubman’s Cup has just finished, with perfect driving conditions following a night of heavy rain.
The Westcountry circuit dried rapid during the Clubman’s Cup qualifying, although the asphalt was still a little slippery for those on fresh slicks. Radical newcomer Craig Currie took a surprise pole position, underlining just how easy the SR3 RS is to drive fast, straight-out-the box. With a fastest lap of 1:05.905, Currie pipped PR6 driver Mark Abbott to the first grid sport, this pair ahead of Clubman’s Cup stalwarts Darren Luke and Colin Millar. Only two seconds covered the top nine runners, with Steven Lindsay the fastest Invitation Class driver, sixth overall. Further down the order, Simon Garmston took pole in the Clubsport Class, closely followed by Andy Harwood.
Qualifying for the CCI Radical UK Cup commenced 35 minutes later, the session split into two to allow both drivers in the two-car teams to set a time. In the first session, Ross Kaiser set the fastest time of 1:01.980, narrowly missing the out on the overall Radical lap record at Castle Combe on a drying track. Kaiser was just ahead of Shaun Balfe, with the fastest SR3 RS, with Radical Works driver Rob Wheldon at the wheel, a fantastic third. 2009 UK Champion Derek Johnston qualified fourth, driving his new SR8 for the first time this weekend.
In the second session, it was Kaiser’s 360 Racing teammate Terrence Woodward that set the fastest time, with Roger Bromiley qualifying alongside him in the #14 works SR8. Manhal Allos set the third-fastest time, before an excursion across the grass curtailed his session. Johnston was fifth, with the fastest SR3 of Ross Allen sixth.
